About Love and Hate Tattoo & Piercing

Before Phoenix had an arts district, a light rail, or a tattoo shop on every corner, it had Love and Hate. The shop has been tattooing at 322 W McDowell Road, just off I-10 in downtown Phoenix, since 1975. That makes it the oldest tattoo shop in Phoenix, and its own site says so proudly. You'll spot it by the mural-covered storefront with a snarling tiger out front. Inside, the walls are so packed with art and memorabilia that the shop doubles as an informal gallery of Phoenix tattoo history.

That history runs through the work. The shop is co-owned by tattooers Meg McNiel and Danny Ross, who are rooted in straight-up, old-school traditional tattooing and hold their artists to a simple standard: clean lines, a strong portfolio, and genuine customer service. Even so, Love and Hate calls itself a full custom tattoo shop and encourages clients to bring their most creative ideas. Its range runs from bold traditional flash to book-cover lettering to one-of-a-kind custom pieces.

The current crew keeps the welcome-like-family feel alive. Addi is a favorite with first-timers for her light hand and patient aftercare advice. Brooke has been known to put a client's favorite cartoon on the TV to make a long session fly by. An experienced piercing staff works under the same roof, and the shop takes both appointments and walk-ins. That combination has kept this landmark downtown Phoenix tattoo shop busy for five decades.
